In March 2024, Sanofi Australia facilitated a national speaker tour with Professor Liam Heaney from Queens University Belfast, Northern Ireland. Attendees were treated to a contemporary and thought-provoking presentation, divided into two parts. In the first, Professor Heaney introduced the concept of a ‘bomb’ (blood eosinophils) meets ‘magnet’ [fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO)] framework to describe different components of type-2 inflammation in severe asthma and the potential for biomarker profiling of patients with monitored inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) treatment. In the second, Professor Heaney discussed the role of the UK Severe Asthma Registry (UKSAR), providing highlights from several recently published studies. This review summarises key messages from Professor Heaney’s presentation and incorporates practical considerations for achieving optimal outcomes for patients with severe asthma.
