Cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED)‐related infections are serious procedure‐related complications that increase the risk of death, and their management often requires hospitalisation, and usually system removal. To prevent these infections, the American Heart Association recommends (class I) prophylactic intravenous antibiotic treatment (typically cefazolin) and meticulous attention to sterilisation. The number of CIED‐related infections is nevertheless rising as the number of people receiving CIEDs increases. A range of infection rates have been reported. Recent multicentre clinical trials have found overall 12‐month infection rates of about 1%, while large population‐based studies have reported rates between 0.7% and 4.3%. The device type, procedure type, and follow‐up time each influence the CIED‐related infection rate, and all need to be considered when comparing infection rates.
