We begin this issue with the double-blind SELECT RCT which showed that semaglutide reduced the risk of adverse cardiovascular events in non-diabetic adults with overweight/obesity and pre-existing cardiovascular disease.

This is followed by an interesting paper which posits that in obesity, inflammatory and metabolic signals induce PD-1 expression on macrophages, inhibiting cancer tumour surveillance – this may explain why individuals with obesity have a higher risk of cancer, albeit with enhanced responses to PD-1 immunotherapy. The next article reports on a pre-clinical study which observed promising responses with the combination of a GLP-1 receptor agonist and an NMDA receptor antagonist (MK-801) in mouse models.

We conclude with a large-scale analysis of more than 17 million UK individuals which reveals that during the pandemic, rapid weight gain was most likely to occur among women, younger adults, individuals living in deprived areas and those with long-term conditions, particularly depression.
