Advanced small-molecule oral therapy in psoriasis - Educational Series

Description

The review provides an overview of current treatments, perceptions and preferences of patients, oral treatment options and a series of relevant studies. It also includes guiding commentary from Dr Jill Cargnello a Dermatologist at the Malvern Dermatology and Medical Laser Clinic in Melbourne.

Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated, inflammatory, multi-system disorder that visibly affects the skin and nails, but it also may be associated with other systemic manifestations that impact other body organs. The association of psoriasis with metabolic, musculoskeletal, and cardiovascular comorbidities further adds to the high burden of disability, reduced quality of life, and lowered life expectancy experienced by patients with this disorder. Psoriasis imposes a significant psychosocial burden on patients, impacting their personal and professional relationships and social interactions. The economic burden of psoriasis to both the individual and healthcare system is also substantial. Given the impact of psoriasis, it makes early diagnosis, appropriate referral, and optimal treatment critical.
