Oral mucosal diseases

Description

Oral Mucosal Diseases is a detailed and practical course that addresses the diagnosis and management of conditions affecting the oral cavity. Divided into two comprehensive units, the course highlights clinical presentations, treatment options, and preventative measures.

Unit 1: Tongue Conditions and Ulcers
This unit introduces a range of tongue-related conditions and ulcerative disorders. Topics include:

  • Geographic Tongue: Recognition of its migratory patterns and asymptomatic nature, with an emphasis on patient education
  • Fissured Tongue: Understanding its genetic basis as a normal variation requiring no treatment
  • Black Hairy Tongue: Risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol use, and the role of improved oral hygiene in management
  • Aphthous Ulcers: Exploration of multifactorial causes, from vitamin deficiencies to systemic diseases like Behçet’s syndrome. Treatment strategies include corticosteroid application, mouthwashes, and systemic therapies for complex aphthosis.

Unit 2: Mouth and Tongue Conditions
This unit expands into conditions involving the entire oral cavity. Key areas of focus include:

  • Oral Lichen Planus: Differentiating its reticular, erosive, and atrophic forms, with topical and systemic treatment options
  • Pemphigus Vulgaris: Addressing its severe erosive presentations, diagnosis via biopsy, and immunosuppressive treatment strategies
  • Leukoplakia and Oral Cancer Risk: Recognizing precancerous lesions and the necessity of biopsy and referral for lesions suspected of malignancy
  • Benign Lesions: Management of mucoceles, fibromas, and pyogenic granulomas through surgical and non-surgical methods.

The course integrates clinical and dermoscopic images, offering practical insights into diagnosis and management. Participants will leave equipped with the knowledge to confidently address oral mucosal conditions in clinical practice, improving patient outcomes through accurate diagnosis and effective treatment plans.
