Medicinal Cannabis - Cancer Symptomatic Treatment

Description

This course consists of two core units, offering a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical case studies:

Unit 1: Theory and Considerations
This unit introduces the foundational concepts of using medicinal cannabis for cancer symptom relief. The discussion begins by clarifying the role of cannabis in treating symptoms like chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), cancer-related pain, and improving sleep and anxiety. It emphasizes that medicinal cannabis is not a cure for cancer but a tool to enhance patient comfort and quality of life. Participants will learn about dosing strategies, including the “start low and go slow” approach, the different types of cannabinoids (THC and CBD), and the various formulations used for treatment. Side effects are also addressed, highlighting the safety and low toxicity profile of cannabis-based treatments.

Unit 2: Patient Case Studies
In this unit, real-world cases are examined to demonstrate the application of medicinal cannabis in cancer care. For example, one case discusses a 56-year-old woman with metastatic breast cancer who experienced severe chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting. The course walks through her treatment, starting with balanced THC and CBD oil, gradual dosage adjustments, and the positive impact on her quality of life. Other cases explore the use of cannabis in managing pain and improving sleep in patients with lung cancer and pancreatic cancer. These practical examples help clinicians understand how to assess, prescribe, and monitor medicinal cannabis treatment.

By the end of this course, participants will be equipped with the knowledge to confidently prescribe and manage medicinal cannabis for cancer-related symptoms, ensuring their patients benefit from improved quality of life.
