The Foreign Bodies and Healing by Second Intention course, presented by A/Prof Maurice Brygel and Dr. Peter Grossberg, provides a comprehensive guide to diagnosing, managing, and treating foreign bodies, as well as understanding the principles of healing by second intention. The course is structured into two detailed units:
Unit 1: Assessment, Investigation, Foreign Body Types, and Surgical Techniques This unit covers the essential steps of patient assessment, including determining the medical condition, history of the event, and foreign body location. It discusses diagnostic imaging tools like X-ray and ultrasound to locate foreign bodies and guides participants through various surgical techniques for removing foreign bodies from different body parts, such as fingers, feet, ears, and nose. The session includes real-life examples, including glass removal and foreign bodies like thorns, splinters, and fish hooks. The unit also covers surgical planning, post-operative care, and informed consent.
Unit 2: Healing by Second Intention The second unit focuses on managing wounds that heal by second intention, where the wound is left open to heal naturally. Participants will learn debridement techniques for removing dead or infected tissue and applying appropriate dressings. Case studies illustrate the process, emphasising the importance of elevation, proper dressing selection, and long-term care for optimal healing. The course discusses the decision-making process for wound management, including the potential use of skin grafting and managing diabetic patients.
This course is ideal for healthcare professionals seeking to enhance their skills in managing complex foreign body removals and wound healing. Through clinical examples and surgical demonstrations, participants will be better equipped to handle these cases in everyday practice.
