Dietary approaches for the management of chronic disease

Description

This course is organized into one comprehensive unit that covers various dietary strategies for managing chronic diseases:

Introduction to Dietary Approaches and Chronic Diseases
The course begins by introducing the role of nutrition in managing lifestyle-related chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. The key risk factors and the importance of long-term, sustainable dietary interventions are emphasized.

Dietary Patterns for Chronic Disease Management
Participants will explore the benefits of several well-established dietary patterns, including the Mediterranean, DASH, and MIND diets, as well as plant-based and vegetarian diets. The course outlines how each of these patterns can reduce the risk of chronic diseases by promoting healthy food choices, including high fruit and vegetable intake, whole grains, and healthy fats.

Macronutrients and Isolated Food Groups
The course delves into the effects of specific macronutrients and food groups, such as high protein, low-fat diets, and low GI foods, on chronic disease management. Participants will learn how to balance these components for optimal health outcomes, particularly in diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Clinical Application and Patient Care
Practical strategies for implementing these dietary approaches in clinical practice are provided. This includes setting realistic goals for patients and addressing common barriers to dietary changes, with a focus on long-term, sustainable habits rather than short-term solutions.

Led by Dr. Jaimon Kelly, this course offers a detailed framework for using diet as a powerful tool in managing chronic disease.
