Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance

Description

This course is structured into two comprehensive units that address the key aspects of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance:

Unit 1: Features, Pathogenesis, and Risk Factors
The first unit introduces metabolic syndrome, defining its features and exploring the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms such as insulin resistance, visceral obesity, dyslipidemia, and hypertension. The module discusses screening tools, medical complications, and the significant role of the gut microbiome. It also outlines the various risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and genetic factors.

Unit 2: Environmental Determinants, Prevention, and Management
This unit focuses on the environmental and lifestyle factors contributing to metabolic syndrome, including poor nutrition, sedentary behavior, and smoking. Practical management strategies are provided, emphasizing diet modification, physical activity, and weight loss. The unit covers medication options such as statins and ACE inhibitors for managing risk factors like dyslipidemia and hypertension. Case studies and examples illustrate how lifestyle changes and clinical interventions can improve patient outcomes.

Presented by A/Professor Stijn Soenen, this course offers a practical, evidence-based approach to managing metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance in clinical practice.
