The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as “behaviour by an intimate partner or ex‐partner that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm, including physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse and controlling behaviours.” The prevalence and severity of experienced intimate partner violence are greater for women than for men. The United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women and target 5.2 of its Sustainable Development Goals aim to eradicate intimate partner violence.
