Vascular Health- conditions, treatments and surgery

Description

Vascular disease remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Australia, and GPs are critical in early recognition and referral. This comprehensive education session delivers practical updates on carotid artery disease, complex aortic pathology, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), venous disorders, and diabetic foot management.

Learn how to recognise subtle vascular presentations, apply simple diagnostic tools such as the ankle–brachial index, and implement evidence-based management strategies. With insights from leading medical specialists, this session equips you with knowledge to optimise outcomes, prevent complications, and strengthen your role in multidisciplinary vascular care.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Recognise early and common presentations of vascular disease in general practice, including peripheral arterial disease, carotid artery disease, aortic aneurysms, venous insufficiency, and diabetic foot complications
  2. Apply appropriate diagnostic tools (such as ankle–brachial index, Doppler ultrasound and vascular imaging) to support timely and accurate assessment of vascular conditions
  3. Implement evidence-based management and preventive strategies, including cardiovascular risk factor modification, pharmacological therapies, and conservative approaches to chronic limb-threatening ischaemia
  4. Determine when referral to vascular surgery or specialist care is required, and differentiate between conservative, urgent, and elective referral pathways
  5. Coordinate multidisciplinary care with allied health, podiatry, diabetes educators and vascular specialists to optimise long-term outcomes and reduce complications such as stroke, amputation, and hospital readmission.
