Oxygenation, time to switch - Professor Anil Patel

Description

In this presentation, Professor Anil Patel reviews oxygenation and the introduction of nasal high flow into anaesthetic practice. He provides an overview of its evolution, critical features, and international adoption, while also exploring what the next generation of this technology may bring for anaesthesia and critical care. The talk explains how nasal high flow differs from conventional approaches, outlining its physiological advantages and focussing on five key mechanisms: (1) positive airway pressure, (2) improved CO2 clearance, (3) washout of anatomical dead space, (4) enhanced pulmonary mechanics, and (5) reduced upper airway resistance. Finally, Professor Patel considers the clinical relevance of these benefits and their potential in shaping future anaesthetic practice.
