Practitioners will learn how to complete infant and early childhood mental health assessments and management through practice reflection and developing skills to:

• Describe theory and evidence of risk and protective factors contributing to infant and early childhood mental health and wellbeing
• Demonstrate core practice skills which support effective engagement with a parent and children during an infant/child mental health assessment
• Apply observational skills to parent-infant interactions and young children to inform infant and early childhood mental health assessments
• Identify and assess common mental health difficulties in children aged 0-5 years by undertaking a biopsychosocial mental health assessment
• Develop and manage a comprehensive Mental Health Treatment Plan for common child mental health difficulties
• Provide developmentally appropriate psychoeducation to parents and children, and quality support for children with mental health difficulties and to their families.

Learning Outcomes

1. List the key strengths and vulnerabilities that influence infant and early childhood mental health
2. Prioritise the key engagement skills required as part of an infant and early childhood mental health assessment
3. Assess common mental health difficulties in children aged 0-5 years by undertaking a biopsychosocial mental health formulation
4. Develop a comprehensive management plan related to common early childhood mental health concerns for children under 5 years.
