A GP Framework for Child Mental Health Assessment (5-12 years)

Description

Patients talk to their GPs about mental health more than any other health condition, and the RACGP Curriculum highlights the important role GPs play in children’s mental health. MBS data from 2018-19 shows that 6.71% of mental health consultations with GPs were for children aged 5-14.

In this course, you will learn how to use a framework to complete a child mental health assessment and management. The course will also develop your:

  • knowledge of common child mental health conditions
  • engagement skills required when interacting with a child and their family
  • practical skills for child mental health assessment and management.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Outline the key strengths and vulnerabilities which influence child mental health
  2. Prioritise the key engagement skills required as part of a child mental health assessment
  3. Assess common mental health difficulties in children aged 5-12
