JDocs: Emergency Airways

Description

This workshop is highly relevant for those interested in applying for anaesthetics, ED, ICU and surgical specialties. This one-day hands-on workshop features practical stations including anatomical landmarks, didactic sessions and case studies and discussions.  Hands-on sessions are guided by expert faculty and focus on the incisions and percutaneous insertions involved in front-of-neck surgical access techniques.

Workshop Content

Participants will rotate through a number of interactive animal tissue and model practical sessions and presentations.

Airway Management:

  • Airway assessment
  • Establishment of airway - head tilt/chinlift/jaw thrust
  • Basics of Bag Mask ventilation
  • Oropharyngeal / Nasopharyngeal airways and Capnography
  • Laryngeal mask
  • Emergency chicklist: Team approach / shared mental model
  • Direct an dvideo laryngoscopy ETT insertion
  • Failed intubation (CICO/Vortex)

Surgical Airways - Front of Neck Access Techniques:

  • Anatomy landmarks and surgical cricothyrotomy
  • Emergency needle cricothyrotomy

Chest Drains - Placement and Management:

  • Chest drainage
  • Intercostal catheter insertion and suturing
  • Thoracentesis
  • Needle decompression for tension pneumothorax 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Participants will have gained knowledge and familiarity with the physiology and anatomy of airways
  2. Participants will have gained knowledge and experience in chest drains, their management and placement
  3. Participants will deepen their understanding and skills in surgical airways: cricothyrotomy
  4. Participants will have gained knowledge and experience with airway management.
