JDocs: Emergency Procedures

Description

Participants will deepen their understanding and skills in basic ultrasound scanning techniques, proctoscopy and rigid sigmoidoscopy. They will also gain knowledge and familiarity with the physiology and basic techniques in suprapubic and central venous catheter insertion.

This one-day hands-on workshop features animal tissue and synthetic models and its content is specifically designed to meet the essential surgical skills required to apply for specialty training, and follows the RACS Junior Doctors Curriculum Framework.

Practical Sessions and Presentations

Basics of Ultrasound:    

  • Terminology and definitions    
  • Knobology: probes and modules    
  • Scan planes and image orientation    
  • Patient positioning    
  • Ultrasound guided cannulation

Access techniques:    

  • CVC placement under ultrasound (sub-clavian)    
  • Interosseous vascular access (EZIO)    
  • Nasogastric tube placement    
  • Presentation: Seldinger technique and the arterial line

PR Examination:    

  • Digital examination    
  • Proctoscopy and sigmoidoscopy    
  • Foreign body retrieval

Catheterisation techniques:    

  • Male and female urethral catheter    
  • Suprapubic catheter 

Learning Outcomes

  1. Improved level of confidence and hands on experience in a range of skills and behaviours for medical emergencies
  2. Gain knowledge and familiarity with the basic techniques in basic and advanced urinary catheterization skills
  3. Deepen understanding and skills: Proctoscopy and rigid sigmoidoscopy, and basic ultrasound scanning techniques
  4. Deepen theoretical knowledge and practical skills in vascular access techniques.
