Unravelling Urticaria: Distinguishing CSU in General Practice

Description

Recurrent weals are a frequent reason for GP visits, yet many patients with Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria are misdiagnosed as having allergy, eczema, or dermatitis, or experience delays in reaching a definitive diagnosis. This often leads to unnecessary investigations or repeated short courses of oral corticosteroids.

This webinar provides a clear, practical framework to help you distinguish CSU from its key mimics using lesion behaviour, pattern recognition, and minimal investigations. Through 3 case studies of increasing complexity, you’ll learn how to recognise hallmark features, avoid common diagnostic pitfalls, and identify when symptoms suggest an alternative diagnosis or warrant specialist referral.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify the hallmark clinical features of CSU and differentiate it from its common mimics, while recognising red flags that suggest other systemic or autoinflammatory conditions
  2. Apply simple, evidence-based diagnostic tools—such as lesion duration, pattern recognition, UAS7 and UCT—to confirm CSU and rule out alternative causes in primary care
  3. Use a structured, stepwise approach to initial management, recognising when ongoing symptoms, red flags, or atypical features indicate the need for specialist referral.
