Finding accredited CPD
With the new GP-led model-of-care for ADHD, many GPs need to upskill in either the initial assessment, or in its diagnosis and management. This ‘taster’ module is the first in the course on the initial assessment and diagnosis. ADHD4GPs offers a balanced, more clinically conservative perspective that you will not find in most other ADHD courses.
The GP-led model-of-care has been introduced in response to the escalating demand for ADHD assessments. This escalating demand is but one aspect of a wider phenomenon: of increasing prevalence, and more frequent diagnosis. For GPs however, accuracy of diagnosis is paramount. It is the foundation of good management.
This first module describes the characteristics of the advocacy-driven pro-diagnosis approach, and the patient-centred over-diagnosis view. In the process of an ADHD assessment, the module describes the balance between sensitivity and specificity; it recommends a shift in emphasis towards specificity. And it suggests a classification of the adverse consequences of misdiagnosis.
You the GP can help address the demand for ADHD assessment, by upskilling. You do not need to be credentialled to prescribe stimulants to perform an initial assessment. Indeed, with more than 35 years’ experience in the field, I can assure you there is much to be done before a trial of medication. And you can do it. Far better you, than a single-disorder ADHD diagnostic clinic.
ADHD4GPs presents this, the first module in the course on initial assessment / diagnosis in children. It is free. I hope you find the more conservative approach fits more with your style of practice. If you do, please give us feedback in the questionnaire. With sufficient reinforcement, the remainder of the course modules will soon follow.
