Paediatric Continence Elective Module 3: Enuresis

Description

Enuresis is the third of seven electives in the Paediatric Continence course. This module will cover:
  • enuresis
  • enuresis assessment
  • enuresis treatment
  • therapy resistant enuresis
 
NOTE: You must complete the core unit, Introduction to Paediatric Continence before undertaking any of the electives.You will be able to enrol in this module, however will not be granted access until the core module is completed.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of Topic 1 Enuresis, you should be able to: 

  1. Define enuresis 
  2. Identify the difference between monosymptomatic and non-monosymptomatic enuresis 
  3. Identify aetiological factors for enuresis 
  4. Describe some of the common features of enuresis 
  5. Explain which other underlying conditions which may cause enuresis
  6. Explain the consequences of enuresis.

By the end of Topic 2 Enuresis assessment, you should be able to: 

  1. Explain the importance of history taking as part of an enuresis assessment 
  2. Identify warning signs for underlying conditions which may require further investigation 
  3. Describe what physical examination is necessary based on the history 
  4. Explain how a bladder diary can be a useful part of an assessment 
  5. Recognise when further testing may be required and which tests may be appropriate. 

By the end of Topic 3 Enuresis treatment, you should be able to: 

  1. Explain the role of education in enuresis treatment for both parent and child  
  2. Identify appropriate lifestyle advice in enuresis treatment 
  3. Describe the indications for using enuresis alarm therapy  
  4. Describe the indications for using desmopressin in enuresis treatment 
  5. Discuss the practicalities of alarm therapy in the treatment of enuresis 
  6. Discuss the practicalities of desmopressin in the treatment of enuresis

By the end of Topic 4 Therapy resistant enuresis, you should be able to: 

  1. Identify some common assumptions which can be made about children with therapy-resistant enuresis
  2. Describe which further investigations may be necessary with these children
  3. Recognise the impact of constipation on enuresis
  4. Describe how anticholinergic therapy can be used to treat enuresis
  5. Identify the common side effects of anticholinergic drugs
  6. Describe how the tricyclic antidepressant Imipramine can be used
  7. Identify the contraindications for Imipramine.
