Diagnosis of metabolic dysfunction and type 2 diabetes

Description

On completing this course, health professionals will be able to:

  • Describe the diagnostic components of metabolic syndrome and identify the key clinical criteria and presenting signs and symptoms of insulin resistance in adults.
  • Select and interpret relevant diagnostic tests used in metabolic dysfunction, including fasting glucose, HbA1c, OGTT, HOMA-IR, lipid profiles, liver function tests, and markers such as ALT, ferritin and C-peptide.-
  • Recognise the wide-ranging symptoms and signs of insulin resistance—from weight gain, fatigue, and carbohydrate cravings to dermatological findings (acanthosis nigricans, skin tags) and gender-specific manifestations like menstrual irregularities and erectile dysfunction.-
  • Appraise the progression and impact of insulin resistance over time, understanding its role as a primary driver of chronic disease, including the development of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and fatty liver disease.-
  • Differentiate between diabetes subtypes by understanding common features and diagnostic strategies for type 1, type 2, and latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), including the use of antibody and C-peptide testing.-
  • Utilise additional investigations, such as continuous glucose monitoring, coronary calcium scoring, sleep studies, and body composition imaging, to provide a comprehensive assessment of metabolic health and cardiovascular risk.-
  • Appreciate the importance of early diagnosis and intervention in metabolic dysfunction to prevent and mitigate the long-term burden of chronic disease in clinical practice.
  • Promote ongoing professional collaboration within multidisciplinary networks to optimise outcomes for individuals with or at risk of metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

These outcomes will equip clinicians with practical knowledge and clinical reasoning skills essential for diagnosing, assessing and supporting patients with metabolic dysfunction using state-of-the-art, evidence-based approaches.
