Continence Assessment and Management for General Practitioners

Description

General Practitioners play a pivotal role in helping those with, or at risk of developing incontinence, manage the condition and improve their quality of life. This course provides GPs with the skills and knowledge to identify patients with or at risk of developing incontinence and assess and manage continence issues.


Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss the prevalence of continence problems in Australia
  2. Explain the effect incontinence has on quality of life
  3. Incorporate strategies into patient consultations to encourage them to talk about continence problems as:
    1. A stand-alone issue
    2. The result of another condition such as prostatectomy, pregnancy
    3. The side effect of medications
  4. Describe the spectrum of presentations of pelvic floor dysfunction
  5. Effectively use bladder and bowel diaries in the diagnosis and monitoring of continence problems
  6. Provide patients with accurate advice and education to improve and manage their symptoms
  7. Identify when referral to other health professionals is needed
  8. Apply available referral pathways.

  2. Identification and assessment of incontinence
  3. Managing incontinence
  4. Referred care of urinary incontinence
