Men's Health Seminar - TAS

Description

There is a continuing life expectancy gap between men and women in Australia, with men’s average lifespan running to 81.2 years, while the average woman can expect to reach the age of 85.7. Within the top 10 leading causes of death in Australia, 7 have a higher mortality rate for men with the highest variation pertaining to ischaemic heart disease and malignant neoplasms. Men also die of suicide at a rate over three times higher than women. An anticipatory approach to men's health in general practice should assess risk for these conditions and offer effective interventions, either to prevent them or manage them early. Clearly General Practitioners are in a position to contribute to the health of men in Australia as they are the major health service providers for men in our society. It is difficult to single out a particular age group or sub population of males that requires special attention, because different age groups have different health concerns.
