Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe what a patent foramen ovalue is and why it is relevant in ESUS/cryptogenic stroke
  2. Summarise the epidemiology of PFO and ESUS in the Australian population
  3. Describe the clinical presentation of PFO-related ESUS and how that differs from traditional embolic stroke
  4. List the diagnostic work up required to make a diagnosis of ESUS and PFO, including the bubble test and transcranial doppler study
  5. Illustrate the relevance of traditional stroke risk factors that may be present in a patient with PFO-related ESUS and their impact on diagnosis and management.
