Can we achieve remission or reversal of Type 2 Diabetes?

By completing this course, health professionals will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of type 2 diabetes remission, including definitions and the criteria for various stages of remission.
  • Evaluate the evidence supporting low-carbohydrate dietary interventions for type 2 diabetes, including results from randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews.
  • Interpret clinical data on the impact of dietary changes on glycaemic control, weight, blood pressure and lipid profiles in patients with type 2 diabetes.
  • Assess the effectiveness of digital health programs (such as apps and online interventions) in supporting patients’ self-management and achieving diabetes remission.
  • Apply practical strategies for patient education and support, including how to recommend and monitor low-carbohydrate approaches in primary care.
  • Recognise the value of ongoing support and follow-up for sustaining lifestyle changes and improving long-term outcomes in type 2 diabetes management.
  • Reflect on current practice and identify areas for improvement based on feedback from GP evaluations and patient outcomes.These outcomes are designed to equip health professionals with the knowledge and skills to support patients in achieving improved metabolic health and, where possible, remission of type 2 diabetes through evidence-based dietary and digital interventions.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Outline the diagnostic criteria for T2DM remission
  2. Implement appropriate de-prescribing in a patient with T2DM remission/reversal.
