Administering Anaesthetic to Cleft Patients

Description

Anaesthesia and surgery for cleft lip and palate patients is one of the most commonly performed procedures by overseas aid teams. There is no national or international agreement of the "best" anaesthesia or analgesia for these procedures. The key to safety and success involves careful patient selection, tailored intra-operative management and simple but effective post-operative analgesia.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Outline the limitations of remote and under-resourced locations on cleft procedures
  2. Identify patient screening and selection criteria
  3. Describe the conduct of intra-operative anaesthesia
  4. List the options for post-operative analgesic management on the ward and at home.
