This course is divided into six units, each focusing on different aspects of diagnosing and managing depression.

Unit 1: Introduction to Depression
This unit provides an overview of the global and Australian statistics on depression, including its prevalence and impact on various populations. Participants will explore the definitions and causes of depression, including the distinction between situational sadness and clinical depression. It emphasises the increasing burden of depression worldwide and highlights common symptoms experienced by different age groups, such as adolescents and the elderly​.

Unit 2: Risk Factors and At-Risk Groups
This unit dives into the risk factors that predispose individuals to depression, including genetic predisposition, life events, personality traits, and comorbid medical conditions. It also discusses specific at-risk groups such as carers, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, adolescents, refugees, and LGBTQI+ individuals. The module covers how social isolation, financial stress, and major life transitions contribute to the development of depression​.

Unit 3: Diagnosing Depression
In this unit, participants will learn about the criteria for diagnosing major depressive disorder using the DSM-5 framework. The importance of thorough patient history and mental state examinations will be emphasised. The unit also covers the use of screening tools, such as the two-question patient health questionnaire, and explains how to differentiate depression from other psychiatric conditions like anxiety and bipolar disorder​.

Unit 4: Treatment Approaches
This unit introduces non-pharmaceutical treatments for depression, focusing on psychoeducation, lifestyle changes, and psychological therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). It discusses how to engage patients in therapeutic conversations, the role of exercise, and the impact of nutrition and social support on mental health. Techniques such as mindfulness, progressive muscle relaxation, and structured problem-solving are explored in detail​.

Unit 5: Treatment with Medication and Other Medical Options
Participants will gain insights into pharmacological treatments for depression, including the use of SSRIs, SNRIs, and tricyclic antidepressants. The unit covers the side effects of medications, their efficacy in treating moderate to severe depression, and the importance of regular follow-up to monitor for suicidality and adverse effects. The use of antipsychotic medications, lithium, and ECT for resistant cases is also discussed​.

Unit 6: Case Studies
The final unit presents real-world case studies to illustrate the complexities of diagnosing and treating depression. Participants will review cases involving both adults and adolescents, exploring how to navigate difficult situations such as depression co-occurring with dementia or sexuality concerns in adolescents. The case studies help bring together the practical application of the knowledge covered in the previous units​.
