Oral contraceptives are commonly prescribed in general practice, yet selecting the most appropriate formulation is becoming increasingly complex as new preparations, PBS listings and prescribing guidance evolve. Choosing between combined oral contraceptives (COCs) and progestogen-only pills (POPs), understanding safety profiles, and managing adverse effects require an evidence-based, patient-centred approach.
In this webinar, GP Dr Jenny Maxwell, obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr Gino Pecoraro, and GP Dr Natalia Rode provide practical guidance on oral contraceptive prescribing in general practice. Through a longitudinal patient case, participants will explore contraceptive selection across different life stages, application of Medical Eligibility Criteria (MEC), PBS considerations, management of breakthrough bleeding and other common adverse effects, and appropriate referral pathways. A live Q&A will address prescribing scenarios and support translation of evidence into practice.
