This course is divided into four case-based units, each addressing a different condition that frequently affects male patients. It provides in-depth discussions on patient management, treatment options, and best practices.
Unit 1: Tobacco Cessation
The first case addresses the ongoing burden of tobacco-related diseases in Australia. Participants will explore a detailed case study of a long-term smoker seeking help to quit after numerous unsuccessful attempts. This unit delves into the latest strategies for smoking cessation, including traditional methods like patches and gums, as well as the potential role of vaping. It also highlights key statistics on smoking prevalence and its health impacts.
Unit 2: Gout
In this case, participants will follow a 58-year-old male with a suspected gout flare. The unit covers risk factors, diagnostic tests, and the differential diagnosis of gout, with a particular focus on managing hyperuricemia and lifestyle modifications. Participants will gain insight into both acute treatment strategies and long-term prevention of gout flares through diet, medications, and lifestyle adjustments.
Unit 3: Peripheral Vascular Disease
This unit presents the case of an 80-year-old male with symptoms of intermittent claudication and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Participants will explore the diagnostic approach, including the use of the ankle-brachial index (ABI) and Doppler studies. The management of PAD, including lifestyle interventions, medications, and when to refer for surgical intervention, will be thoroughly examined.
Unit 4: Congestive Cardiac Failure
The final case involves a 65-year-old male with symptoms suggestive of congestive heart failure. This unit covers the pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria, and classification of heart failure. Treatment strategies, including the use of triple therapy and advanced medications, are discussed. Participants will also learn about the importance of managing co-morbidities and the role of lifestyle modifications in improving patient outcomes.
