Hands-on advice for therapeutic carbohydrate reduction in T2DM

Description

By completing this course, health professionals will be able to:

  • Understand the practical implementation of therapeutic carbohydrate reduction (TCR) for managing type 2 diabetes, including macro distribution options (liberal low carb, moderate low carb, ketogenic and higher protein ketogenic) and how to set up appropriate macronutrient targets for different patient needs.
  • Identify and recommend suitable food swaps for common high-carbohydrate foods, enabling patients to make sustainable dietary changes (e.g., alternatives for bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, cereals, snacks and sweets).
  • Assess and address micronutrient needs by evaluating food profiles and understanding the importance of nutrients such as B vitamins, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, choline and omega-3 fatty acids in the context of a low-carbohydrate diet.
  • Support patients in troubleshooting barriers to dietary change, including strategies for meal planning, eating out and adapting to family and lifestyle circumstances.
  • Monitor and interpret clinical outcomes such as glycaemic control, weight, lipid profiles and blood pressure, and recognise the impact of increased protein intake on nutrient deficiencies and overall metabolic health.
  • Provide individualised guidance for special populations, including women, older adults and active individuals, with a focus on meeting specific nutritional and protein requirements.
  • Educate patients on the importance of electrolytes and hydration, and offer practical advice for managing potential side effects during dietary transitions.
  • Encourage sustainable lifestyle changes by equipping patients with practical tools (e.g., meal tracking, quick meal ideas, and understanding nutrition labels) and ongoing support to achieve long-term improvements in metabolic health and quality of life.

These outcomes are designed to equip health professionals with the knowledge and practical skills to implement and support TCR interventions for patients with type 2 diabetes and related metabolic conditions.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Recommend appropriate individualised TCR prescribing for a variety of differing populations.
