Following Queensland's legislative reforms, GPs with the appropriate skills and FRACGP qualification can now diagnose ADHD and initiate psychostimulant treatment without requiring specialist referral. This shift places general practice at the centre of ADHD care, requiring confidence in recognising ADHD across diverse ages, presentations and comorbidities. This course provides General Practitioners with an evidence-based framework for managing ADHD in general practice, while recognising when specialist input, cultural safety considerations, or exclusion of alternative diagnoses is required.
Through eight interactive case studies, participants explore ADHD assessment and management across general practice, including:
-
Assessing a young child with possible ADHD and behavioural concerns
-
ADHD assessment in an Indigenous child, incorporating trauma-informed, culturally safe care
-
Differentiating ADHD from other diagnoses in an adolescent girl with disordered eating concerns
-
Managing ADHD in a young adult following drug-induced psychosis and cannabis use
-
Supporting a university student with ADHD and autism to complete his degree
-
Assessing and initiating treatment for adult ADHD in a mother with a disorganised lifestyle
-
Excluding differential diagnoses when assessing ADHD in a woman with bipolar disorder
-
Assessing ADHD in an older adult with pre-existing mental health and cardiovascular history.
Learners will develop practical skills to assess ADHD across the lifespan, apply Queensland's legislative framework for diagnosis and prescribing, exclude important differential diagnoses, and provide culturally safe, patient-centred ADHD care in general practice.
