In Australia, more than 40 000 people are incarcerated on any given day. Among incarcerated people, the prevalence of substance use and substance dependence is high — in large part due to the criminalisation of drug use. In Australia, surveys indicate almost two‐thirds of prison entrants had used illicit drugs in the previous year, over 50% of people who are incarcerated have a substance dependence, and over 30% have an opioid dependence.
