OPTIMISE Asthma Care (Mini)

Description

Asthma is a complex and highly prevalent chronic disease affecting approximately 11% of the Australian population.

Many people with asthma in Australia do not have control of their condition due to a variety of reasons, including gaps in appropriate prescribing of preventer medications, poor adherence to therapy, poor inhaler technique and lack of regular and structured assessment to identify patients with poor asthma control.


Learning Outcomes

  1. Review current asthma literature and clinical guidelines relevant to Australian General Practitioners applicable to adults and adolescents with asthma
  2. Assess patients with asthma in the community for clinical warning signs of deterioration, including markers of poor control and exacerbation risk, and initiate appropriate escalation of management to reduce morbidity and prevent acute presentations
  3. Apply best-practice strategies to assess inhaler technique, reinforce correct use of bronchodilators, and address adherence barriers to improve symptom control and clinical outcomes in patients with asthma.
