Prevention of Respiratory Infections: Risk Stratification, Vaccination and System‑Level Approaches

Description

This Educational Activity consists of four recorded expert discussion videos with a duration of 1 hour. The activity explores respiratory infections, with a particular focus on vaccination, identification of high‑risk populations, and system‑level approaches to preventive care.

The content addresses clinical risk stratification, including age, comorbidities, immunosuppression, frailty and performance status, as well as emerging challenges such as “silent” immunosuppression associated with modern therapies. The activity also examines multidisciplinary responsibility for vaccination, communication between hospital and primary care, and broader system and policy considerations that influence preventive care delivery.

The educational approach is discussion‑based and reflective, drawing on international clinical and health‑system perspectives rather than prescriptive guideline instruction.

Following completion of the Educational Activity, you are required to undertake a Reviewing Performance activity with a duration of 1.5 hours. This involves completion of a:

  • Self-Assessment of the Educational Activity
  • Practice Reflection and Case-Based Activity

Learning Outcomes

  1. Describe key risk factors for severe respiratory infections, including age, comorbidities, immunosuppression, frailty, and performance status
  2. Recognise populations at increased risk due to less obvious or “silent” immunosuppression related to modern therapies
  3. Explain the role of prevention and vaccination as core components of high‑quality healthcare, alongside treatment of acute disease
  4. Identify system‑level and multidisciplinary strategies that can support vaccination uptake, including shared responsibility across specialties and nurse‑led or opportunistic approaches
  5. Discuss challenges to preventive care, including misinformation, patient mobility, fragmented records, and policy or reimbursement variation.
