Scabies is a cutaneous infestation caused by the ectoparasite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis. It is recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the most common neglected tropical disease (NTD) with cutaneous manifestations. Scabies disproportionately affects socially disadvantaged populations, most notably in tropical settings, although sporadic outbreaks occur in high income country settings in overcrowded institutions such as residential aged care facilities. This narrative review provides an analysis of the epidemiology, clinical presentation and strategies employed to identify and control scabies.
