A Primary Care case: IgA Nephropathy - how to recognise rare forms of kidney disease

Description

This module uses a real-world primary care case to support general practitioners to recognise IgA nephropathy early, initiate appropriate first line investigations and management, and make timely, high-quality referrals that improve long term kidney outcomes.

IgAN often presents without symptoms and is detected incidentally. Primary care clinicians play a critical role in identifying concerning patterns, excluding more urgent pathology, and initiating kidney protective care.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Identify symptoms of rare kidney disease, such as IgAN that require timely referral to nephrology
  2. Coordinate appropriate referrals with essential data that includes current blood chemistry, uACR and urine microscopy for red cell morphology, current and historical blood pressure, and kidney/ureter/bladder ultrasound
  3. Apply relevant ongoing management for the diagnosis in a primary care setting.
