Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Safety in Clinical Practice

Description

AIDA's Cultural Safety Training is an 8.5-hour, clinically focused, face-to-face workshop designed to support health professionals to embed cultural safety into their everyday practice.

Developed and delivered by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors, the workshop combines lived experience, history, critical self-reflection and real-world clinical case studies. Participants are encouraged to examine how attitudes, assumptions, privilege and racism can influence healthcare experiences, while exploring practical strategies to strengthen culturally safe practice.

Using a strengths-based approach, the workshop supports participants to better understand Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander experiences within the health system and identify actions that contribute to more culturally safe, equitable and responsive healthcare environments.

Throughout the day, participants engage with case studies drawn from clinical practice, revisiting and reflecting on their responses as their learning develops. The workshop uses interactive and experiential teaching methods including discussion, reflection, feedback and practical application activities.

The training is typically delivered from 8:30am to 5:00pm and facilitated by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander doctors and cultural educators who model culturally safe behaviours and practices throughout the learning experience.

Topics covered:

  • Holistic Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health and Wellbeing
  • Health Equality, Privilege and Racism
  • System Racism and Systems Change
  • Being an Ally
  • Cultural Safety in Practice
  • Implementation Post - Training
