How an understanding of atopic dermatitis pathophysiology has resulted in targeted treatments - Educational Series

Description

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, debilitating, chronic or chronically relapsing, intensely pruritic type 2 inflammatory skin disorder1-3 that affects Australians across all stages of life. Moderate-to-severe ADsignificantly affects patients’ quality of life, with negative impacts on mood, sleep, daily activities, and workproductivity. Consequently, AD has far-reaching impacts on patients and their families.

Irrespective of age, the overall goal of treatment of AD should be to achieve long-term disease control, inwhich symptoms (e.g., pruritus) are absent or mild, daily activities are not being affected, sleep quality isrestored, the impact of treatment on quality of life is minimal, and there are no (or minimal) drug-relatedtoxicities.
