Liver Disease Series Part 2: Progressive liver disease in the community: how to recognise, grade and intervene in liver fibrosis

This is the second educational video in a three-part series on liver disease for Healthcare Professionals. This activity aims to build general practitioner confidence in the management of patients with known non-alcoholic steatohepatitis who are risk of disease progression. There will be a particular focus on recognising the patient with fatty liver who has risk factors for disease progression that are un- or under-managed. The basis for management of fatty liver at risk of progression is repeated assessment at clinical, biochemical, anatomical and lifestyle levels.

  1. Outline the causes of chronic liver disease in Australia, with an emphasis on the increasing burden of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in the community
  2. Identify the medical and lifestyle factors associated with disease progression towards fibrosis
  3. Describe the clinical and biochemical markers of progressing liver disease
  4. Outline the methods available for assessing fibrosis in general practice, including non-invasive fibrosis scoring and the role of Fibroscan
  5. Detail the management of a patient with progressing liver disease including mitigation of underlying causes, management of nutritional deficiency and infection prevention measures.
