This is the third and final educational video in a three-part series on liver disease for Healthcare Professionals. This activity aims to build general practitioner confidence in the management of patients with established cirrhosis There will be a particular focus on prevention of complications and management of decompensated liver disease to prevent repeat hospitalisations, improve quality of life and extend survival.

Details

  1. Outline the features of decompensated cirrhosis
  2. Outline how to reduce the likelihood of progression from compensated to decompensated cirrhosis
  3. List the management principles of cirrhosis complications including ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, portal hypertensive bleeding, cramps, bone disease, malnutrition
  4. Outline systems used to apply regular monitoring and surveillance in patients with advanced liver disease
  5. Detail the management of a patient with progressing/severe liver disease in the general practice setting, the role of gastroenterologists/hepatologists, and criteria for admission/hospital-based care
  6. Define the role of GPs in supportive and symptomatic management of patients with end-stage liver disease and their carers.
