Management of Atrial Fibrillation

Description

Atrial fibrillation (AF) remains a frequent and high-impact condition encountered in Australian general practice, with significant implications for stroke prevention and long-term cardiovascular health. This session delivers a focused update on contemporary AF management, including risk assessment, evidence-based anticoagulation, and indications for specialist referral, with an emphasis on practical application in everyday GP care.

Participants will also examine evolving approaches to stroke prevention, including the role of left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) for selected patients who are not suitable for ongoing anticoagulation. Using clinically relevant scenarios, this activity supports GPs to refine decision-making, individualise management strategies, and coordinate care pathways to enhance patient safety and outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Review incidence, prevalence and pathophysiology associated with Atrial Fibrillation (AF)
  2. Discuss lifestyle factors that increase the risk of AF
  3. Review medical and new procedural management of AF, including ablation and Left Atrial Occlusion Devices
  4. Discuss the impact of early referral for treatment of all types of AF.
