The Middle Leader program is a professional development course for senior doctors, consultant level and above. The program aims to build leadership capability and knowledge, supporting participants to find their own leadership voice and style, and to lead with confidence in complex collaborative environments.
As a Middle Medical Leader, reporting to senior staff, managing junior doctors, and collaborating with peers are significant responsibilities that bring unique challenges.

Learning Outcomes
- Understand effective leadership in complex collaborative team-based healthcare environments
- Develop awareness of how you take up your leadership role and your personal strengths and challenges in this area
- Develop awareness of how you take up your role authentically, and the role of values and purpose in your work
- Develop awareness of others and how to work and communicate effectively with a diverse range of colleagues in an inclusive and effective way
- Understand and have skillset in fundamental communication skills including perspective-taking, active listening, managing assumptions and unconscious bias, practising empathy, and compassion
- Understand psychological safety, how to observe this and to create and enhance in your teams

- Develop skills for leading in constantly changing environments and leading new change projects to innovate and adapt to new needs and challenges
- Develop greater self-confidence for leadership work and a greater clarity in your leadership identity, understanding self-doubt, stress, and anxiety and how to use gratitude and self-compassion to sustain your leadership practice
- Develop greater understanding and awareness of work-life balance, self-care and wellbeing, and practical skills and behaviours for guarding again exhaustion and burnout for yourself and others
- Develop a strong understanding and skillset for developing strong professional relationships and networks in your current role and beyond to support professional wellbeing, growth, and career advancement
- Develop a deep understanding of how to ensure sustainable behavioural change using personalised goal setting, SMART actions, and realistic timelines.
