Obesity and Reflux Management in 2026

Description

Obesity and reflux are common, interrelated conditions in general practice that require a structured, patient-centred approach to assessment and management. This session equips GPs with practical strategies to identify clinical obesity, manage comorbidities, and apply evidence-based treatment pathways, including when to initiate pharmacotherapy or refer for specialist care.

Using real-world cases, it highlights appropriate referral timing, the role of surgical options, and the importance of ongoing GP-led follow-up to optimise long-term patient outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Assess adults with obesity using BMI, comorbidity burden, functional impact, medication contributors and patient-centred readiness for change
  2. Compare lifestyle, pharmacological and surgical management options for obesity, including expected benefits, limitations, safety considerations and long-term follow-up needs.
  3. Identify patients with obesity or reflux symptoms who require specialist referral, endoscopy or consideration of bariatric or anti-reflux surgical assessment
  4. Implement safe GP follow-up for patients receiving obesity pharmacotherapy or post-bariatric surgery, including nutritional monitoring, reflux assessment and recognition of complications.
