Pre-Operative Assessment and its role in Perioperative Management

Description

As anaesthetists, the pre-anaesthetic assessment forms a vital component of our planning and management of the patient. Appropriate pre-, intra- and post-procedural care can be based on the knowledge detailed in the assessment process. Risks can be determined, appropriate discussions can be made with all stakeholders (surgeons, physicians, anaesthetists, the patient), care plans determined, and consent obtained. A structured approach to assessment utilising screening tools better enables the identification of patients with risk, and aim to better manage those patients through the perioperative period.

In this video, the information focuses on screening as part of our pre-anaesthesia assessment, assigning risk to our findings, and consider risk management as part of our perioperative care of the patient. The presentation will also review some literature for evidence of impact on patient outcomes.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Implement the role of pre-anaethetic assessment in patient care
  2. Evaluate the Pre-Anesthetic Assesment for meaningful data to facilitate patient care
  3. Review literature for evidence of improvement to patient outcomes.
