When a NOAC isn't enough in stroke: Knowing when to close the left atrial appendage in stroke

Description

This activity aims to:

  • Outline the seriousness of AF-associated stroke and recurrent stroke, with a particular emphasis on understanding which patients cannot safely take oral anticoagulation therapy and which patients continue to stroke despite treatment
  • Raise awareness amongst GPs of the option for left atrial appendage closure in such patients as a stroke risk mitigation therapy in appropriately selected patients
  • Assist GPs in identifying which patients would benefit from a discussion with a multidisciplinary team regarding LAA closure

  1. Summarise the pathophysiology, epidemiology and impact of atrial fibrillation-associated stroke and recurrent stroke in Australia
  2. Outline current Australian guidelines pertaining to the management of non-valvular atrial fibrillation
  3. Describe the contraindications to oral anticoagulation therapy
  4. Describe the role of the left atrial appendage in AF-associated stroke, and current available options for its closure
  5. Illustrate which AF and/or stroke patients benefit from a discussion with a multidisciplinary team regarding the utility of LAA closure as a stroke mitigation therapy.
